The new Package Travel Directive and how it affects you

June 19, 2018

As you may be aware, as of 01 July 2018  the Package Travel Directive 2015 will be enforced across European member states. The following information provides a quick overview and sources of further information to help you understand the directive and the implications it may have on you.

Tour operators that offer a travel ’package’ already work to a principle of providing a ’duty of care’ to their customers. The definition of a ’package’ has changed over the years and this new  directive extends the reach to protect consumers who book ’combined travel’ e.g a combination of a flight, plus hotel or car rental booked via a website. Therefore if you provide air, hotel and car rental as part of your services to your customers, this may mean that you fall within the guidelines.

The travel services include those that are pre-arranged, customized or linked travel arrangements, which all have their own definitions. Other areas to consider include: Information, price increase / decrease, cancellation by the customer, if something goes wrong, assistance for travelers and insolvency.
