Travelport Cares: How we're making our mark

Travelport is much more than a global technology company. When you look within these walls, you’ll find a common theme among our employees when they explain what they enjoy about #LifeAtTravelport: the people. Culture and corporate social responsibility are primary investments we make in our organization, and honestly, its our talent and passions that help our business thrive.

In my first Travelport Cares blog, I described how employees are fundraising and supporting local charities across the globe with our Give 150% program. I am continuing the focus on the Travelport Cares community pillar in this blog, to demonstrate how Travelport extends its support for employees to dedicate one of their most valuable assets - their time - for supporting the causes they care about.

Make Your Mark (MYM) days: Each year, we grant employees (who have been with us for more than 6 months) one paid day off to volunteer for an eligible charity - or participate in a fundraising activity to support a cause in their community. By freeing up our people to do good and offering them a “Make Your Mark Day,” we provide them the flexibility to use their volunteer time in a way that personally speaks to them and their willingness to give back.

Employees worldwide are able to volunteer alone, or, organize team events and extend invitations for their colleagues based locally to join in their efforts. In fact, our interns in the U.S. and in the UK recently participated in a group MYM day, where they selected a local charity to volunteer for and participated as a group.

Here’s a few ways our employees have utilized their own MYM day this year:

  • Kayaking to clean and collect garbage: With the support of the NGO Green Kayak, Travelport employees in the Nordics spent a MYM day collecting more than 9 kg of plastic and other waste polluting the waters of Copenhagen Harbour.
  • Packing medical supplies for those in need: Thirteen of our Global Product and Product Propositions employees based in Denver, CO, USA volunteered at Project CURE, the largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries around the world. The team spent the day packing hundreds of pounds of latex gloves and hundreds of diapers, as well as sorting donated supplies in preparation for shipment to communities around the world.
  • Spending quality time with the elderly: Travelport Hotelzon employees in Espoo Finland offered their helping hands to a local elderly housing facility, Kanervakoti – Kanervahemmet, where they baked waffles, played games with the residents and spent time just enjoying each other’s company. One volunteer commented: “The smiles on the residents face spoke more than million words. All along this was a wonderful experience on both sides.”
  • Treasure hunting for sick children: Travelport employees in Ireland joined over 1,600 members of the Irish tech and business communities as part of the Techies4TempleStreet charity event. Our colleagues took to the streets of Dublin for a unique treasure trail, combining outdoor activities with digital media challenges whilst making an impact to the lives of sick children across Ireland in support of the Temple Street Hospital.
  • Providing care to the ill: An Atlanta, GA, USA employee enjoys spending time at a local hospital, and splits her volunteer time between visiting patients on the hospital floors and cuddling with the premature babies in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). This is how she takes advantage of her annual MYM Day, and, her motto for volunteering (and life) is “be the reason someone smiles today.”
  • Feeding the hungry: One of our New Jersey, USA based employees spent a MYM day collecting donated food items from local grocery stores and making deliveries to the elderly and others in need around the community through Half Table Man.
  • Helping the homeless: A group of 10 Langley, UK employees spent their day at Slough Homelessness Our Concern (SHOC) where they sorted through clothing donations, worked in the kitchen to help prepare hot meals and socialized with those in need of SHOC’s services.
  • Restoring mother nature: One of our Australian employees worked with Conservation Volunteers Australia to restore an area park and it’s creek banks its former glory as a valuable habitat. Under the guidance of a CVA representative, she spent the day identifying and removing weeds, managing of overgrown flora and removing rubbish from the grounds.

This year, we’re doing more to highlight the skills, energy and passion our employees are contributing to make our world a better place. And this Travelport Cares blog series is a start. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, the #TravelportCares program enables employees to support the causes they care most about, within three core pillars, which we’ll continue to expand on in future blogs:
